- Trinity's softball team completed an eight-game home stand with a
doubleheader sweep of NAIA's Lindenwood (MO) University on Wednesday.
Trinity (14-8) won the opener 4-3 with a run in the
bottom of the seventh, then won 5-2 in the second game.
Lindenwood opened the day with a run in the first
inning of game one, but Trinity answered with a three-run first to take
control of the game.
Tiger starter Jillian Degerness held the visitors
scoreless over the next five innings, but the Lions managed two unearned
runs in the seventh to tie the game. Degerness gave up just one
earned run on four hits in the complete-game victory, improving her
record to 6-1 this season.
Michelle Gossein hit a two-run double in the first
inning for the Tigers, and it was her at-bat that ended the game in the
seventh. With two on and two outs, Gossein hit a sharp grounder to
second that was misplayed to allow her to reach base on the error.
Jamie Williams came around from second to score the game-winning run.
Williams scored two runs in the game, and
Christina Carni was 2-4 with a pair of singles.
In game two, Lindenwood again scored in the first
inning to take an early lead, but Trinity was able to answer again -
this time in the second inning. The Tigers then scored two more
runs in the fourth and a final run in the fifth. The Lions scored
once in the seventh, but were unable to come back this time against
Trinity.
Erin Mulvey improved to 6-4 on the season with the
win, allowing two runs - one earned - on three hits in pitching the
complete game. Mulvey struck out eight batters in the game - her
first appearance in just over two weeks.
Carni added three more hits in game two to improve
her team-leading batting average to .426 on the season. Gossein
also had two hits and two more RBI in the second game.
Kate Wright was 2-3 with two runs and a double in
the second game.
Trinity heads to Austin College this weekend for a
four-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series in Sherman,
Texas. The Tigers return home on April 4 to face LaGrange College
in a doubleheader that will be the final home games of the regular
season. |
