- Trinity's softball team swept a Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference doubleheader from Millsaps College to open up a four-game
weekend series on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (21-9, 8-2) won 3-2 in eight innings to open the day, followed
by a 6-2 win in game two.
Millsaps opened the game's scoring with a run in
the bottom of the first, but Trinity claimed its first series lead with
a two-run third. The Majors did not trail long, though, scoring in
the bottom of the inning to tie the game.
The score would remain tied through the regulation
seven innings of this contest, with one extra inning needed to decide
the outcome. Michelle Gossein hit her first career homer in the
top of the eighth to give Trinity the edge. Gossein's game-winner
came with two outs in the eighth.
Erin Mulvey (11-4) secured the win for the Tigers,
allowing just one earned run on five hits through eight innings of work.
Mulvey also struck out 10 batters - including two in the final inning -
to reach two outstanding milestones. Her first strikeout of the
eighth inning was the 400th of her career, making her the SCAC's
all-time strikeout leader.
Jamie Williams also went 2-4 with one run and one
RBI in the opening game. Her RBI triple in the third inning was
the fifth triple of the year for her, tying the school record for a
single season.
Game two started off much differently for both
teams, as Trinity opened the scoring in the first inning, then adding a
five-run third to streak to a 6-0 lead. Millsaps rallied for two
runs in the fourth, but the team would get no more against the Tigers in
game two.
Jillian Degerness (8-2) allowed one earned run on
seven hits through seven innings, striking out five batters.
Amy Blaha was 2-4 with two RBI in game two, while
Kate Wright had two hits and two runs from her leadoff position.
Christina Carni was 2-2 with one run scored, and
Erin Fodness knocked in a pair of runs in the second game.
The two teams will cap the weekend with a
doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 11:00 a.m. With the wins
today, Trinity has clinched at least a share of first place in the SCAC
West Division. |
