Trinity Sweeps Midland Lutheran Tuesday

San Antonio - Trinity's softball team resumed its schedule after a nine-day layoff, handing Midland Lutheran College a pair of shutouts on Tuesday evening.

Trinity (10-6) won 7-0 in the opener, followed by a 5-0 victory in game two.  The Tigers also recorded 16 total hits in the two games, allowing just four to the Warriors hitters.

Jillian Degerness (5-1) took the victory in both games, capping her night with a one-hit shutout in game two, striking out five batters.  She gave up a single in the second inning, then proceeded to retire 15 of the next 16 batters in a row - allowing just one baserunner on a walk.

Degerness allowed three hits through six innings of the first game, recording three punch-outs, and walking just two total hitters in 13 innings of work.  She was also 2-5 with two runs and one RBI at the plate, cracking her second double of the season.  First-year pitcher Karen Fisher made her season debut, striking out two hitters in the seventh inning to put the finishing touches on the opening game.

Trinity opened the first game with four runs in the first three innings, followed by a three-run fifth to account for the final score.  In game two, the Tigers scored once in the first, then had back-to-back two-run innings in the fourth and fifth.

Amy Blaha led the team with three hits in the two games, which included a 2-3 performance in the opener.  Blaha also drove in three runs and drew one walk to reach base in four out of six plate appearances.

Michelle Gossein had two hits in tonight's games, ripping a triple in both ends of the doubleheader.  The triples were her first of the season, and she also had three RBI and one run scored.

Erin Fodness also collected three hits and scored twice, while Katie Longacre was 2-5 with two runs and two RBI.  Jamie Williams and Kate Wright scored two runs for Trinity, and Wright stole the only base for either team in the two games.

Trinity will be off until the weekend, at which time it will open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play at home against Hendrix College.  The two teams will play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
