| Pineville, Louisiana
- Trinity's softball team had its 2007 season end at the hands of
Mississippi College on Friday evening, losing a 7-1 game at the NCAA
West Regional Tournament. Trinity (26-12)
fell behind early as the Lady Choctaws scored six runs in the second
inning - five of which came on a pair of home runs.
Mississippi College added an unearned run in the
bottom of the fifth, and though the Tigers finally got on the board with
a solo homer in the sixth, the scoring would end there for both teams.
Michelle Gossein hit her second home run of the
season in the sixth to put Trinity on the board, and a pair of other
Tiger players had multi-hit games.
Kate Wright and Erin Fodness had two hits each,
with Wright hitting her ninth double of the year to tie for the team
lead this season.
Jillian Degerness (8-4) took the loss for Trinity,
giving up four runs and striking out one. Erin Mulvey, who had
given up just one run in 21 innings heading into this game, came on in
relief in the second inning, giving up three runs - two earned - and
recording seven strikeouts.
Mulvey finished her career by striking out the
final five batters she faced, which also makes her both Trinity's and
the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's single season strikeout
record-holder. The previous record was 157 strikeouts in a season,
and Mulvey finished her season with 162. She also became the SCAC's
career strikeouts leader earlier in the year.
Katie Longacre and Lee Smith also collected hits
for the Tigers in this game.
With the loss, Trinity is eliminated from the
tournament, while Mississippi College advances to face Linfield College
tomorrow afternoon. |
