- The Tiger softball team swept a doubleheader from Schreiner
University on Saturday afternoon, forcing a run-rule in both games.
Trinity (2-2) won 12-2 in the opening game,
followed by a 10-0 shutout in game two. Overall, the Tigers scored
22 consecutive runs on the day, as Schreiner actually struck first with
two runs early in game one.
Schreiner hit a two-run homer in the top of the
first inning to go ahead 2-0 on Trinity, but the Tigers answered back
with five runs in the bottom of the inning. The home team tacked
on two more in the third, followed by a five run fourth that set up the
run-rule after five innings.
Jillian Degerness (1-0) took the win with five
solid innings of work, allowing just two hits after the first inning.
Degerness struck out five without allowing a walk in five innings of
work.
Lee Smith tied her career-high with four RBI in
the opener, capping her game with a two-run double in the fourth.
She also recorded two sacrifice flies for the Tigers.
Kate Wright was 2-3 with two runs scored, while
Katie Longacre scored twice and also drove in two more Trinity runs.
Melissa Johnson and Jamie Williams scored three
runs each, and Kristin Yurasits was 2-3 with her first career triple.
Erin Mulvey (1-1) tossed a one-hit shutout in
the second game, striking out nine and walking zero in five innings.
She was also 2-2 with two runs and one RBI at the plate - including a
third-inning double to left-center.
The Tigers opened up the game with two runs in
the first inning, followed by a three-run third. The team then
scored five runs in the fourth for the second straight game, once again
forcing the run-rule after five innings.
Smith added two more RBI to give her six for the
day, while Williams scored two more runs to total five in two games.
Degerness also scored twice for Trinity, as well as driving in a run in
the third.
Trinity will not return home until March 20
against Midland Lutheran, but will be in action next Saturday at Texas
Lutheran. The team will also face Division II power St. Mary's
University on March 1. |
