Tigers Run-Rule St. Mary's (MN) to Open Tournament

Panama City, Florida - Trinity's softball team opened up its part in the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association Leadoff Classic with an 8-0 win over St. Mary's (MN) University on Friday afternoon.

Trinity (5-4) scored in all five innings of the game - which was shortened due to the run-rule - including five runs over the second and third innings.  The Tigers scored once in the fifth to put themselves in position to end the game early.

Erin Mulvey (3-2) tossed a three-hit shutout to earn the victory, striking out three batters without allowing a walk.  Mulvey also went 1-4 with one RBI at the plate.

Michelle Gossein led the Tigers in hitting, finishing 2-3 with a double, scoring once, and driving in one run.

Katie Longacre was 1-1 with two runs and one RBI, and it was her first-inning single that brought home the game's first run.  Longacre also recorded a stolen base - as did Kate Wright, who also finished 1-2 with two runs and one RBI and drew two walks.

Lee Smith scored twice and drove in two runs, reaching base twice in the game.

Trinity will face Wheaton (MA) later today to complete the first day of action in the tournament.  Tomorrow, the Tigers take on Coe (IA), followed by the start of bracket play (determined by previous results).
