- Trinity's softball team swept Texas Lutheran in a non-conference
doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Trinity
(4-2) won 9-1 and 7-4 in the team's first road games of the season.
The Tigers pounded out 13 hits in the opening game, followed by an
11-hit performance in game two. Trinity pitchers held Texas
Lutheran to seven total hits and just two earned runs in the
doubleheader.
Erin Mulvey (2-1) tossed a two-hitter in the
opening game, striking out nine and allowing three walks. Mulvey
was also 2-5 with one RBI and two runs at the plate in game one.
Trinity opened up the scoring with a run in the
first inning, drawing a bases-loaded walk to take a 1-0 lead.
After a double and a stolen base, Texas Lutheran scored on a wild pitch
in the second to tie the game 1-1. The Tigers scored in three
straight innings to close out the game - including a five-run seventh to
seal the win.
Jamie Williams was 4-5 with two runs and one RBI
in the first game, while Kate Wright drove in three runs. Michelle
Gossein and Christina Carni collected two hits each for the Tigers as
well. The four hits for Williams were a career-high.
In game two, Trinity jumped out to a 4-0 lead in
the first three innings. Jillian Degerness (2-0) allowed four runs
on five hits, but just one of those runs was earned. Degerness
also struck out five Bulldog hitters, and reached base twice on offense.
Williams and Carni both had multi-hit games again
for the Tigers, collecting three hits each in Saturday's finale.
Williams hammered three doubles and scored three runs in the second
game, while Carni added two more runs.
The three doubles by Williams ties her
career-high, which is also the school record for a single game.
Williams had three doubles last year against DePauw to break the record.
Kristin Yurasits was 2-4 with one RBI, while Katie
Longacre drove in two runs with a first-inning single.
Texas Lutheran cut the 4-0 lead down to 4-3 after
the fifth inning, but the Tigers answered with a three-run sixth to push
back to a four-run lead.
