- The Tiger softball team needed a late rally to slip past Wheaton
(MA) College on Friday afternoon at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, earning a
6-5 victory with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Trinity (6-4) scored its third run with two outs in
the bottom of the seventh to win it, avoiding a last-inning meltdown of
its own.
Wheaton took the early lead with one run in the
first, but the Tigers answered with a two-run inning of its own.
The Thunder tied the game in the top of the second, but Trinity took a
3-2 lead with another run in the fourth. That lead stood until a
wild and crazy seventh inning.
Wheaton started the inning off with a single and a
stolen base, followed by an error that allowed the tying run to score.
The Thunder later had a two-run single to take the lead, and looked
poised to steal a win over the Tigers.
Trinity, though, would not be denied, as a one-out
double got the team going in the bottom of the seventh. That
double was followed with an RBI single and an RBI double to tie the
game. The game ended on an error by Wheaton, which allowed the
game-winning run to come home.
Christina Carni was 4-4 with two runs and two RBI
for Trinity - including the RBI single in the seventh to start the
three-run inning.
Jamie Williams scored a pair of runs for the
Tigers, and it was her ground-rule double that tied the game in the
seventh. She later came around to score the winning run.
Michelle Gossein knocked in a pair of runs, while
Lee Smith was 2-3 with one run scored in the game.
Jillian Degerness allowed just two earned runs
(four overall) on six hits through six innings, recording three
strikeouts. Mulvey (4-2) came on in the seventh in relief, earning
the win for the Tigers. With that win, Mulvey ties the school's
all-time win mark with 34 in her career. Degerness has also tied
Trinity's record for most games pitched with 60 appearances in her
career.
Trinity will take on Coe (IA) College tomorrow,
followed by bracket play. With two wins today, the Tigers can
qualify for the "Gold Bracket" with a win over Coe. |
