San Antonio
- Trinity's softball team had to settle for a split of a Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Austin College on
Saturday afternoon, following a 4-3 win with a 5-1 loss in game two.
Trinity (14-16, 9-1) suffered its first SCAC loss of
the season in game two, after improving to 9-0 in the West Division in
the opener.
Austin College scored once in each of the first
three innings, and Trinity was only able to match that pace for the
first two innings. The Tigers tied the game in the fourth, taking
advantage of a leadoff double by Karen Fisher. After holding
Austin College scoreless in the fifth, Trinity loaded the bases with one
out, but was not able to break the tie.
In the bottom of the sixth, Trinity had runners on
the corners with two outs when Christina Carni cracked a single to
left-center to drive in the go-ahead run.
Kate Wright (8-0) then retired three straight
Austin College hitters in the seventh to secure the win. Wright
struck out a career-high five batters in the complete-game victory.
She also went 2-4 with a run scored on offense.
Carni was 2-4 with one RBI, while Krista Prato
Matthews went 2-3 with one run and one RBI. Teresa Greppi also
went 1-2 with one RBI.
In game two, Austin College struck first once
again, scoring three runs in the second and third to go ahead 3-0 early.
The visitors then added runs in the fifth and sixth to push the lead to
5-0, and Trinity had just three hits - all singles - heading into the
final inning. The Tigers scored their only run in the inning,
collecting two more hits, but it was not enough to catch Austin College.
Michelle Gossein was 2-3 in the second game to
lead the offense. Jamie Williams, who was 1-4 in game one,
finished 0-2 in the game (she was also hit by a pitch), snapping a
hitting streak that had reached 28 games. It is the longest streak
in school history.
Trinity and Austin College wrap up the SCAC
weekend series with another doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The
first game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. |
