San Antonio
- The Tiger softball team split a Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference doubleheader with Austin College for the second straight day,
as both teams won 6-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity (15-17, 10-2) took the opening game with a rally in the later
innings, then fell short of a repeat performance in game two.
Austin College opened the game with three runs,
but Trinity answered with two runs of its own. After Austin added
another run in the third, the score was 4-2 heading into the fourth.
The Tiger bats came to life in the bottom of the inning, getting
back-to-back two-out hits to drive in three runs and claim their first
lead of the day.
Kate Wright (9-0) gave up just three earned runs
on nine hits to earn the win, but allowed no runs and just two hits over
the final four innings to set up the team's comeback.
Karen Fisher was 2-2 with two runs and one RBI in
the game, while Jamie Williams and Lee Smith both went 2-4 with a run
scored. Smith also drove in two runs in the fourth to give the
Tigers a 5-4 lead at the time.
In game two, Austin College again opened the game
with five runs in the first two innings to take control, but Trinity
scored twice in the second to narrow the gap. After Austin added
another run in the third to make it 6-2, Fisher came on in relief of
starter Helen Thompson.
Fisher threw four shutout innings to finish off
the game, giving up just two hits and striking out two batters, keeping
the game within reach for the offense.
Smith and Wright both had two more hits in the
second game, as did Krista Prato Matthews. Prato Matthews was 2-3
with two RBI, and she had her first career home run - a solo shot to
left-center to lead off the fourth inning.
Trinity also scored again in the fifth to make it
6-4, but the comeback would not be repeated as the Tigers had just two
hits in the final two innings.
Trinity will travel to Hendrix College for a
four-game SCAC series next weekend, finishing off the regular season
schedule. The Tigers currently lead the SCAC West Division, but
still need to split next weekend to ensure the West's top seed for the
SCAC Championships April 25-27 in Danville, Kentucky. |
