- The Tiger softball team lost an 11-10 game to Piedmont College to
open its part in the Millsaps College Classic at Freedom Ridge Park on
Friday afternoon. Trinity (3-10) tied the
game at 10-10 in the top of the sixth, but couldn't hang on in the
bottom half of the final inning after a leadoff double and a bunt single
put two runners on with no outs. The winning run actually scored
on an error as the Tigers attempted to throw home to cut down the
winning run on a ground ball to the infield.
The Tigers went up 3-0 in the third inning after
Michelle Gossein cracked a two-out homer with two runners on base.
Piedmont answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and then three
more runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.
Trinity would not trail for long, though, as
Gossein hit her second homer of the day to lead off the top of the
fifth. The long ball marked the first time in school history that
a Tiger player had hit two home runs in one game, and tied the score at
4-4. Trinity added two more runs in the inning to go ahead 6-4
heading to the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Piedmont put together
an inning in which they hammered out five hits and took advantage of two
Tiger errors to score six runs. The result was a commanding 10-6
lead heading into the final two innings.
Caitlin Richards doubled home two runs for Trinity
in the top of the inning, though, and Karen Fisher scored her second
straight RBI to highlight a four-run sixth that tied the game and kept
the Tigers alive. The inning ended on a double play that kept the
score tied, and Trinity went down in order in the seventh to set up
Piedmont's final-inning heroics.
Gossein finished 2-4 with three runs and four RBI
in the game, and now has three homers on the season. She needs
just one more to tie for the most in Trinity single season history.
Richards finished 2-3 with two runs and two RBI,
while Karen Fisher was 2-4 with two RBI for the Tigers. Christina
Carni was 3-4 with a run scored in the game.
Helen Thompson took the loss for Trinity, giving
up seven earned runs and striking out four in a complete-game effort.
Trinity will face nationally-ranked Louisiana
College to continue the Millsaps Classic later this afternoon. The
Tigers will face four more different teams over the next two days at the
tournament. |
