- Trinity's softball team opened up defense of its SCAC Championship
with a pair of wins over Rhodes College on Thursday afternoon.
Trinity (6-14) won 5-2 in the opener, then edged
Rhodes 4-3 in the second game, completing the doubleheader sweep.
The Tigers scored once in the first and once in
the third to take a 2-0 lead after three innings, but Rhodes answered
with a two-run inning in the fourth to tie the game.
Trinity broke the tie in the fifth, scoring on an
error by Rhodes, then added two more insurance runs in the sixth.
Rhodes was able to load the bases in the top of the seventh, but Karen
Fisher struck out the final batter to end the threat.
In the second game, it was Rhodes that took the
early lead, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage through three innings.
Trinity was finally able to get on the board with a run in the fourth,
then tied the game with a pair of fifth-inning scores on a double from
Jamie Williams.
Neither team scored in the sixth, and Rhodes went
in order in the seventh, setting up Trinity with a chance to win it in
the bottom of the inning. After a pair of one-out hits and a walk,
Trinity's Lee Smith stepped in with the bases loaded. On the first
pitch, Smith smashed a single to center field to finish off the first
day of action in the SCAC series.
Kate Wright (3-0) gave up two unearned runs on two
hits through six innings of game one, while Fisher earned her second
save of the year by finishing off the final inning. Wright was
also 2-3 with two runs scored at the plate, while Fisher was 1-3.
In game two, Helen Thompson (2-9) gave up two
earned runs - three total - on eight hits to earn the complete-game
victory.
Jamie Williams collected two hits in each game,
scoring two runs and driving in a total of two more. She extended
her hitting streak to 19 games in the process, which is the longest
streak in school history.
Trinity and Rhodes will finish the series tomorrow
at noon, playing two more conference games. The Tigers have now
won 25 consecutive games over Rhodes. |
