- The Tiger softball team was forced to settle for a doubleheader
split with Texas Lutheran University on Tuesday afternoon.
Trinity (9-15) secured its fifth straight win in the
opening game with a 1-0 shutout, then lost a 12-7 game in the finale,
snapping the team's win streak.
Kate Wright (5-0) tossed a two-hit shutout in the
opening game, which gave her 16 consecutive innings without allowing a
run. She struck out two batters in the game as well.
Christina Carni and Lee Smith nabbed two hits each
in the opener, and Smith scored the game's only run in the second
inning.
In game two, Texas Lutheran finally got on the
scoreboard, scoring nine runs in the first two innings to take a 9-0
lead. The Tigers scored four times in the fourth and then three
more runs in the fifth, but TLU still held a 10-7 advantage. Texas
Lutheran added runs in each of the final two innings to finish the
scoring.
Wright came on in relief in game two, extending
her scoreless streak to 18.1 innings before Texas Lutheran was able to
score a run against her in the fifth. Wright also drove in a pair
of runs for the Tigers at the plate.
Carni and Jamie Williams each finished with two
hits and two RBI in the second game, while Caitlin Richards went 3-3
with a run scored. Her three hits set a new career-high for the
sophomore catcher.
Krista Prato Matthews had two hits and scored two
runs, while Teresa Greppi also scored a pair of runs. Carni and
Michelle Gossein each had doubles for the Tigers.
Williams had hits in each game, extending her
hitting streak to 23 games, which extends her school record. She
has had a hit in each game since the season opener.
Trinity will be off this weekend, but will resume
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on April 5 and April 6 at
Colorado College. |
