Trinity Divers Earn All-America Honorable Mention Distinction

 

Oxford, Ohio - Trinity University first-year diver Hayley Emerick of Portland, Texas (Gregory-Portland), finished ninth on Thursday in 1-meter diving at the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

Emerick registered a score of 420.35 and qualified as an Honorable Mention All-American in the meet held at Miami University. She previously was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Female Diver of the Year. Emerick won the 1-meter (475.40) and 3-meter (496.05) boards – at Southlake in February - setting SCAC records in both events.

Senior Lauren Walstad of Katy (Katy) came in at No. 14 on the 1-meter board with a score of 374.10. Walstad became an Honorable Mention All-American for the second consecutive year. She was a two-time SCAC Female Diver of the Year, earning the recognition in 2006 and 2007.

Both divers will compete in the 3-meter event. The preliminaries will be held Friday and the finals Saturday.

Leta Gatton, a senior from Brownsville (Hanna), will swim in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle events. The 200 freestyle is set for Friday and the 100 on Saturday. Gatton won the two SCAC, capturing the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.46 seconds and the 200 freestyle at 1:53.77. Both times broke SCAC records in each event.

Senior All-American Ryan Cook of Katy (Taylor) will compete in his fourth NCAA Division III Men’s Diving Championship, to be held March 20-22, also at Oxford.

Cook has been an All-American twice on the 3-meter board and an Honorable Mention All-American in the 1-meter event.

John Ryan is the Tigers’ head swimming coach and Stan Randall is the diving coach.
