SCAC

![]()
Thursday marked the beginning of the
swimming portion of the 2008 SCAC Swimming & Diving Championships as
nine men's and women's teams began full competition. The meet
began Wednesday night with the men's 1-meter diving, and Trinity's Ryan
Cook won the event and broke the SCAC record in the event.
Trinity's women and DePauw's men have
taken the lead after the first full day of competition at the 2008 SCAC
Championships. Trinity leads with a total of 284.5 points over
DePauw's 248 points. Centre's women's team is currently third with
a total of 214 points. Southwestern and Rhodes round out the
women's top five after Thursday. On the men's side, DePauw scored
287 total points, followed by 246 points by Trinity, and 231 points by
Centre. Colorado College and Sewanee are fourth and fifth after
the opening day of competition.
In the Thursday prelims, there were three
performances of special note, and DePauw women in particular had a nice
start to the meet. DePauw's 200 freestyle relay team made the NCAA
B cut with a time of 1:36.82 to win the morning race. Katie Doogan,
Katie Massey, Amanda Stier, and Maddison Hamil made up the relay for
DePauw, in a time that also broke the SCAC 200 freestyle relay record.
Hamil was also one of two individuals to post a provisional qualifying
time on Thursday, joining Centre's Meredith Angel in the 50 freestyle
race. Angel recorded a time of 24.07 for her qualifying mark,
while Hamil was right behind with a time of 24.36.
Following prelims, the women's 3-meter
diving finals were held, and Trinity had six out of nine divers score in
the event. That included Trinity taking each of the top five
slots, led by first-year Hayley Emerick's record-setting score of
496.05, edging two-time defending SCAC Diver of the Year in Trinity's
Lauren Walstad. Walstad was the previous record-holder with her
score of 472.10 in last year's championships. Lindsay Martin
finished third for Trinity, rounding out the All-SCAC performers in this
event.
The swimming finals were up next, and
DePauw's 200 freestyle relay women's team did not disappoint in the
opening event. The team that broke the SCAC record nearly matched
their record time from the morning, winning the event by nearly one
second. Centre finished second, led by two first-years and two
sophomores, while Trinity came in third place. The men's race was
won by Sewanee, followed by DePauw and Trinity in second and third.
In the 500 freestyle finals, DePauw took
its second straight win as Callie Boehme improved by nearly five seconds
over her morning time, missing the SCAC Championships record by just
0.18 seconds. Trinity's Mary West finished second, followed by Kim
Green of Rhodes. Trinity's Taylor Clark won the men's 500 free
with a time of 4:38.15. Clark also just missed the conference
record, though he did manage a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA
Championships. Centre's Drew Anderson and Brent Bowman finished
second and third, and all three earned All-SCAC honors.
Katie Doogan won the women's 200 IM,
earning another qualifying time. Doogan, who set the SCAC record
in this event last year, finished in 2:09.37 for first place.
Sewanee's Grace Schildknecht came in second, followed by Emily Stumhofer
of Colorado College. Hunter Owen of Centre won the men's 200 IM in
a time of 1:55.87, missing the SCAC Championships record by less than
one second. Colorado College's Andrew Mullen was second, while
Josh Baugh from DePauw finished third.
Centre's Meredith Angel and DePauw's
Maddison Hamil improved their NCAA B cut prelim times in the 50
freestyle, while Jazzy Miller of Rhodes took third place and missed her
own qualifying time by just 0.12 seconds. DePauw took two of the
three All-SCAC spots in the men's 50 free, led by Robert Alexander's
NCAA B cut time of 20.83 seconds. John Cook finished second for
DePauw, followed closely by Jarrett Tate of Rhodes.
The final event of the night was the 400
medley relay, and the winners turned out to be DePauw and Centre.
DePauw's women finished in 4:00.55 in the race, followed by Trinity and
Centre in second and third place. For the men's race, Centre won a
narrow victory over DePauw, finishing in 3:31.26. DePauw was ever
so close to the win, finishing in 3:31.30. Colorado College earned
another All-SCAC honor with its third place finish.
Friday's prelims will begin at 10:00 a.m.
tomorrow morning, followed by the men's 3-meter diving finals. The
swimming finals are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday night.
