TWO TRINITY UNIVERSITY SWIMMERS TO COMPETE IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

SAN ANTONIOTwo Trinity University swimmers will compete in the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday through Saturday at Emory University in Atlanta.

Juniors Zach Coburn of Muskogee, Okla. (Muskogee), and Ryan Van Der Kar of Dallas (Lake Highlands) will represent the Tigers in five events. Both qualified for the NCAA meet at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships last month at Cleveland, Miss.

Coburn, who has attained All-America status the past two years, will swim the 100 and 200-yard backstroke Friday and Saturday, respectively. He finished fourth in the SCAC meet in the 100 backstroke (52.16) and in the 200 (1:53.60). Coburn was named the 2001 SCAC Male Swimmer of the Year.

Van Der Kar, an All-American in 2001, was selected as SCAC Male Swimmer of the Year in February. He set SCAC records in winning the 400-yard individual medley (4:05.22) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.71), in which he will compete Friday and Saturday, respectively. Van Der Kar will also swim in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday.

The Tiger men’s and women’s teams are coached by John Ryan.
