Trinity's women's basketball team was upset by hosting Rhodes College in
the first round of the SCAC Championships Tournament on Friday
afternoon.
Trinity (17-8) trailed 35-40 at
halftime, and lost by the final of 73-86 in the opening round of the
tournament. This marks the first time since the conference
tournament was revived that the Tigers have failed to make the
Championship game.
Rhodes shot 47.4% from the field
in the game, while Trinity was held to just 37.1% shooting overall.
The Tigers hit just under 70% from the foul line (16-23) and under 30%
(5-17) from three-point range. The Lynx hit 80% of their free
throws (24-30) and just under 50% three-pointers (8-17).
Krista Prato Matthews led
Trinity with 21 points on 10-15 shooting, as well as six rebounds and
five blocks. Tierney Hughes added 16 points and three steals,
while Meghan Scholbe finished with 11 points and six boards.
Lauren Andrews recorded a
double-double for the Tigers, scoring 10 points to go with a career-high
and SCAC Tournament-record 12 assists in the game.
Ashley Farrell led all scorers
with 31 points for Rhodes, hitting 9-18 field goals and 10-11 from the
line. Farrell also added five rebounds and four assists for the
Lynx. Crystal Jessee finished with 16 points and a game-high 13
rebounds, and Becky Atnip chipped in with 16 points on 5-10 shooting.
Rhodes advances to play
Oglethorpe in the SCAC Semifinals tomorrow. Oglethorpe defeated
Southwestern 80-67 to open tournament play.
