Trinity's women's basketball team lost for the second time this weekend,
as Austin College won 88-80 on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity (8-5, 2-2) led 45-43 at
halftime, shooting better than 51% from the field and draining 6-8
three-point attempts. Austin College kept pace by shooting nearly
47% from the field and also hitting six first half threes.
Both teams cooled off in the
second half, shooting under 40% from the field. The Kangaroos were
helped by 33 free throw attempts in the period, hitting 25 of those
attempts for 75.8% shooting. The Tigers hit 12-15 foul shots (80%)
in the period and 9-10 in the first.
The Tigers led by as many as
seven points late in the first half, but Austin came back to cut it to a
two-point lead by halftime. Austin took the lead in the first few
minutes of the second half, then never gave up that lead over the final
17 plus minutes.
The Kangaroos built up a
11-point lead with 6:22 to play, but the Tigers went on an 11-2 run to
cut the lead to just two points with 4:05 left. Austin College hit
11-14 free throws to seal the game down the stretch.
Carlee Culver led Trinity with
13 points off the bench, hitting 4-9 from the field and 2-3 from
three-point range. Culver also tied with Krista Prato Matthews for
the team lead in rebounds, as both players pulled in six boards.
Four other players scored in
double figures for the Tigers, including 12 from Tierney Hughes.
Hughes hit 5-7 shots and 2-3 threes, but fouled out in the final minute
of action. Meghan Scholbe and Lauren Andrews both scored 11
points, while Prato Matthews added 10.
Beth Hannon and Leda McDaniel
led the team with four assists each, with McDaniel also collecting seven
points and four rebounds.
Katy Williams led all players
with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Ceren Unal had 18 points to go
with four steals and five blocks.
Trinity will return home to host
Southwestern University Saturday night in a conference doubleheader with
the Tiger men's team.
