San Antonio -
Trinity's women's basketball team avenged a loss from earlier this
season with a 75-59 victory over Austin College in Sunday afternoon's
regular season finale.
Trinity (17-7, 10-4) led 35-30
at the half, holding Austin to less than 35% shooting in the period.
The two teams played a close game most of the first half, but the Tigers
pulled out to a six-point lead with just under five minutes left.
The Kangaroos managed to tie the game at 27-27 with 1:45 remaining, but
Trinity hit a three on its final possession to take the halftime lead.
In the second half, Austin
continued to stay close in the early going, but Trinity went on a 13-0
run to push a six-point lead to a commanding 19-point advantage with
7:14 to play, and the visitors would get no closer than 13 points the
rest of the way.
Meghan Scholbe led all scorers
with 18 points for the Tigers, hitting 7-11 from the field and also
recording three steals.
Krista Prato Matthews was
limited to just 15 minutes because of foul trouble, but still managed 12
points and a team-leading seven rebounds in the game. Lauren
Andrews added eight assists and three steals, while Alexandra Blake hit
4-6 from the field and 3-4 from the line to score a season-best 11
points.
Katy Williams led Austin College
with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Brittany Smith and Jacqueline
Bauer each tied for the team lead with 10 points.
Austin committed 21 turnovers in
the game and shot just 39.6% from the field, while Trinity had just nine
turnovers and hit 46% from the floor.
Trinity will take on Rhodes
College in the first round of the SCAC Championships Tournament next
weekend in Memphis, Tennessee. The Tigers enter the tournament as
the No. 3 seed.
