Danville, Kentucky -
The Tiger women's basketball team bounced back from last night's SCAC
loss with a 65-60 win over Centre College on Saturday.
Trinity (10-6, 4-3) and Centre
were tied 31-31 at the half, and the Tigers shot better than 46% from
the field in the period. Centre shot just under 39% in the first
half, then was held to 32% shooting (8-25) in the final 20 minutes of
play.
The Colonels jumped out to a
10-2 lead early in the game, but the Tigers fashioned an 11-2 run to
take a one-point lead with 9:34 to play in the first. Centre
pushed the lead back to seven a few minutes later, but Trinity managed
to tie it at the break.
The two teams went back and
forth early in the second with neither team taking command until Trinity
rattled off nine unanswered points to go ahead 53-44 with 9:54
remaining. That lead increased to 12 points at the 4:22 mark - the
biggest lead of the game for the Tigers. The Colonels made it
fairly close with a 7-1 run to close out the game, but they fell short
in the end.
Krista Prato Matthews led
Trinity to victory with 16 points and 12 rebounds to go with her four
blocks. Prato Matthews hit 7-12 from the field and had five
offensive rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench.
Meghan Scholbe also had a
double-double for the Tigers, collecting 11 points and 10 boards.
Scholbe also had a pair of assists and seven steals - the second-highest
total of the season for Trinity.
Lauren Andrews also finished in
double figures with 13 points, adding three steals and a game-high seven
assists. Tierney Hughes added nine points, while Martha King
chipped in with six points off the bench.
Centre's Chelsea Goodman led all
scorers with 21 points in the game, while Chrystal Claunch finished with
13 points and five boards. Goodman also led the Colonels with nine
rebounds and three steals.
Trinity returns home next
weekend to take on Sewanee and Oglethorpe in continued SCAC action.
The Tigers then travel to Rhodes and Millsaps the following weekend.
