The Tiger women's basketball team upset the NAIA Division I's
16th-ranked team on Tuesday night, coming from behind to beat Georgetown
(KY) College 73-70.
Trinity (8-3) trailed 29-38 at
the half, and fell behind by as many as 12 points in the first half.
The Tigers came on strong in the second, though, hitting 53.1% (17-32)
from the field in the period. The defense also stepped up the
intensity, holding Georgetown to just 9-26 (34.6%) in the second half.
Trinity kept chipping away at
the lead throughout the second half, cutting it to 50-51 with 11:59 left
- capping an 8-2 run. Georgetown kept Trinity from leading or
tying the game, though, until the 6:44 mark when Trinity made it 58-58.
The teams went back and forth for the next two minutes until Trinity
took its first lead of the game with 4:51 remaining (64-62).
Though Georgetown tied the game twice after that, Trinity never trailed
again.
Tierney Hughes had a super
second half for Trinity, scoring all of her team-high 13 points in the
final period. Hughes hit 6-10 from the field overall, with two of
the missed shots coming in the first half. She also had four
rebounds, two assists, and two steals - including a crucial steal under
the basket in the final two minutes, preserving Trinity's two-point
lead.
Kate Dawson came off the bench
with 11 points and five rebounds, while Meghan Scholbe added 10 points
and six boards. Carlee Culver finished with nine points in 19
minutes off the bench.
Lauren Andrews and Krista Prato
Matthews chipped in with eight points each, and Prato Matthews also had
eight rebounds to lead the team. Andrews recorded seven assists
and four steals to lead the team in both categories.
Carrie Meek led Georgetown with
16 points on 5-8 shooting - also hitting 6-6 from the foul line.
Kim Ingle finished with 14 points and six boards, while Megan Gray and
Ashley Bell tallied 11 points. Gray scored a double-double by
adding 11 rebounds, as well as recording six blocked shots.
Georgetown hit 25-33 from the
foul line and shot just under 39% for the game. Trinity scored
15-20 free throws and finished shooting better than 42% from the floor.
Trinity will travel to Hendrix
College and Austin College this weekend to continue Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference play. The Tigers return home January 13 to
take on Southwestern University.
