Trinity Falls to Howard Payne in Season Opener

Brownwood, Texas - The 22nd-ranked Tiger women's basketball game lost  45-76 to No. 18 Howard Payne University to open the 2006-07 season on Friday night.

Trinity (0-1) lost to the Yellow Jackets in the first round of the NCAA playoffs last season, ending the season for the Tigers.  Trinity trailed 29-45 at the half in tonight's game.

Transfer Tierney Hughes led the Tigers with eight points in the game, while Krista Prato Matthews finished with six points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  Prato Matthews also had three blocks in her 21 minutes of action, while Hughes added four boards.

Three players finished with two assists, including Kate Dawson and Leda McDaniel - last year's leader in assists.  Beth Hannon chipped in with six points and four rebounds.

Trinity shot just 26.9% (18-67) for the game and hit just 5-26 (19.2%) from behind the three-point line.  The Tigers were awarded just nine free throw attempts, hitting four of them, while Howard Payne went 23-35 from the charity stripe.

Trinity will travel to Abilene to take on Hardin-Simmons University - another nationally-ranked opponent - tomorrow night.
