The 22nd-ranked Tiger women's basketball game lost 45-76 to No. 18
Howard Payne University to open the 2006-07 season on Friday night.
Trinity (0-1) lost to the Yellow
Jackets in the first round of the NCAA playoffs last season, ending the
season for the Tigers. Trinity trailed 29-45 at the half in
tonight's game.
Transfer Tierney Hughes led the
Tigers with eight points in the game, while Krista Prato Matthews
finished with six points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Prato
Matthews also had three blocks in her 21 minutes of action, while Hughes
added four boards.
Three players finished with two
assists, including Kate Dawson and Leda McDaniel - last year's leader in
assists. Beth Hannon chipped in with six points and four rebounds.
Trinity shot just 26.9% (18-67)
for the game and hit just 5-26 (19.2%) from behind the three-point line.
The Tigers were awarded just nine free throw attempts, hitting four of
them, while Howard Payne went 23-35 from the charity stripe.
Trinity will travel to Abilene
to take on Hardin-Simmons University - another nationally-ranked
opponent - tomorrow night.
