San Antonio -
Trinity's women's basketball team finished off a weekend sweep in
conference play by defeating Oglethorpe 67-62 on Saturday night.
Trinity (12-6, 6-3) held a 34-24
lead at the half, holding the high-powered Petrels offense to just 24.1%
shooting and seven overall field goals in the first half. The
Tiger offense was not much better at just over 30%. The win for
the Tigers interrupts Oglethorpe's 12-game winning streak, dating back
to December 2.
Both teams improved dramatically
in the second half on offense, as each squad nailed better than 46% of
its shots. The Tigers led by as many as 12 in the first half,
using a 9-2 run to make a five-point game into a double-digit lead.
Oglethorpe quickly erased the
deficit in the second half, though, sprinting out to a 12-0 run to start
the second half and take a 36-34 lead. The teams stayed close for
the next few minutes until Trinity scored six unanswered points to take
a 44-39 lead with just under 14 minutes to play.
The Tigers were able to hold off
the Petrels for much of the remainder of the game, building the lead to
nine points with 2:19 left. Oglethorpe would not go down easy,
using a 6-1 run over the next 1:18 to make it a two-possession game with
a minute remaining. Trinity hit 3-4 free throws in the final
minute to help seal the win.
Meghan Scholbe and Krista Prato
Matthews both turned in double-double performances on the night, but it
was Kate Dawson's career-high 22 points that paced the Tiger offense.
Dawson's previous career high came last year against Oglethorpe.
She hit 7-10 from the field in this game - including both three-point
attempts - as well as 6-7 from the foul line.
Scholbe finished with 16 points
and 13 rebounds, while Prato Matthews had 15 points and 10 boards.
Six of Scholbe's rebounds were on the offensive glass, and Prato
Matthews also added three blocks and a pair of steals.
Oglethorpe's Biz Richmann did
all she could for the visitors, pouring in 22 points and grabbing 15
rebounds. Anna Findlay added 12 points, but fouled out in the
final minutes. Richmann hit 8-20 from the field, as well as 2-3
from three-point range - all of which helped keep Oglethorpe in the game
in the final seconds.
Trinity will travel to Rhodes
and Millsaps next weekend, followed by games at Southwestern and Dallas.
The Tigers return home on February 16 and 18 for the final games of the
regular season against Hendrix and Austin.
