San Antonio -
Trinity women's basketball team jumped out early and never looked back
on its way to a 78-55 win over Sewanee on Friday evening.
Trinity (11-6, 5-3) led 39-12 at
halftime, holding the visitors to just three field first-half field
goals. Trinity shot just under 44% in the first period, while
Sewanee was at 13% for the half. Sewanee improved in the second
half, hitting over 40% from the floor, but Trinity's first half lead
would prove to be too much. Trinity led by as many as 35 points in the
second half, and shot 41% from the field for the game.
Trinity's Krista Prato Matthews
finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds in 18 minutes of play, hitting
6-9 from the field and recording four blocked shots.
Genevieve Hurlbutt and Martha
King both came off the bench to tie with for the team lead in points,
scoring 13 points each in less than 20 minutes of action. Hurlbutt
hit three three-point shots, while King hauled in six boards.
Kate Dawson added nine points
and was one of five Trinity players to record four assists in the game.
Lauren Andrews, Beth Hannon, Leda McDaniel, and Alexandra Blake were the
others. Blake also had eight rebounds. Meghan Scholbe
chipped in with six points, six rebounds, and three steals - with five
of her rebounds coming on the offensive end.
Steffi Renninger led Sewanee
with 10 points and three assists, while Rachel Miller added nine points
and a pair of steals.
Trinity will take on Oglethorpe
tomorrow evening to finish off the SCAC weekend. The Tigers will
then travel to Millsaps and Rhodes next weekend.
