San Antonio -
After trailing by as many as 12 points in the first half, the Trinity
women's basketball team staged a second-half comeback to defeat
Southwestern University 74-59 on Saturday evening.
Trinity (9-5, 3-2 SCAC) trailed
22-31 at the half, then out-scored Southwestern by 24 points in the
final 20 minutes to take the win. Both teams shot less than 40%
from the field in the first half, but it was Trinity's 56.7% shooting in
the second half that propelled them to the win.
Southwestern went on a 14-2 run
in the first half to take a 28-16 lead, and seemed to be in control of
the game. The Pirates still led by 12 in the opening minutes of
the second half before the Tigers began to chip away at the lead.
Trinity then went on a 9-0 run to tie the game 41-41 with 13:06
remaining, and was then clinging to a 47-46 lead a few minutes later.
The next run would seal the win as Trinity rattled off 13 of the next 16
points to pull ahead by 14 with 5:29 to play.
Trinity's Meghan Scholbe led all
players with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the game, as well as recording
four steals and two blocks. Scholbe hit 6-13 from the field and
6-8 from the foul line in the game.
Carlee Culver had a solid game
off the bench for the Tigers, knocking down 4-7 from the field on her
way to 15 points in 20 minutes of action. Tierney Hughes also
scored in double figures with 11 points.
Krista Prato Matthews tied
Scholbe with 11 rebounds in the game, also scoring six points.
Alexandra Blake added nine points and five boards off the bench.
For Southwestern, Jessica
Stephenson and Kelli Hill each turned in 14-point nights, while Kendal
George scored 12 points and grabbed five boards. Natasha Azizi led
the Pirates with 10 rebounds.
Trinity will travel to SCAC-leading
DePauw University next Friday night, followed by a Saturday evening tilt
at Centre College. Both games are scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.,
and will be doubleheaders with the Tiger men's team.
