Georgetown, Texas -
The Tiger women's basketball team suffered a 63-67 upset loss at the
hands of Southwestern University on Friday night.
Trinity (14-7, 8-4) held a slim
30-29 lead at the half, despite holding the Pirates to just 30% shooting
in the opening period. Both teams shot well in the second half,
but Southwestern made three more three-pointers and four more free
throws in the period to pull off the victory.
Neither team held much of a lead
for most of the first period, though Trinity did begin to pull away late
in the half - leading 23-17 with 5:13 to go. Southwestern was able
to cut that lead down by the end of the period, hitting a pair of free
throws with 22 seconds left for the halftime score.
Trinity again started to pull
away in the second half, but Southwestern would not allow the lead to go
to more than five points. That led to a short run that tied the
game at 51-51 with 8:06 to play, then to the team's first lead since
early in the first half a minute later.
The Pirates pulled ahead by six
with 5:41 left, but now it was Trinity's turn to mount a comeback.
The Tigers outscored Southwestern 8-2 over the next couple of minutes,
tying the game at 61-61 with 1:50 to play. Trinity managed just
two more shots the rest of the way as Southwestern pulled away with the
important SCAC win.
Krista Prato Matthews led
Trinity with 26 points and 12 rebounds in the game, hitting 11-16 from
the field and 4-6 from the foul line. Lauren Andrews added 16
points for the Tigers, also recording six assists and pulling in four
rebounds.
Natasha Azizi and Kendal George
led Southwestern with 21 points each, and George earned a double-double
with 11 rebounds. Azizi also had eight boards and four assists.
Trinity will head to the
University of Dallas tomorrow night to finish off the regular season
road schedule. The Tigers return home next weekend to finish off the
regular season against Hendrix and Austin.
