San Antonio -
Trinity's women's basketball team had its seven-game winning streak
snapped in a 56-69 loss to University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Friday
afternoon's Trinity Holiday Tournament Championship.
Trinity (7-3) trailed 29-30 at
the half, just missing a chance to take the lead on a last-second layup
that glanced off the rim at the buzzer. Both teams shot less than
34% in the opening period, including an 8-25 (32%) performance by the
visiting Blugolds.
UW-Eau Claire was much better in
the second half, hitting 11-26 (42%) from the field, but Trinity's
percentage dropped below 31% in the second period.
The Tigers opened the second
half with a 12-2 run that put them in front by nine in less than five
minutes of action. The Blugolds answered back with a short spurt
that kept the game close, but Trinity held onto the lead until the 8:45
mark.
UW-Eau Claire took a five-point
deficit to an eight-point lead with a 13-0 run in the middle of the
period, and though Trinity got to within three with 3:25 to play, and
within five with 1:17 remaining, the Tigers could not pull out the win.
Kate Dawson led Trinity in
scoring in both games this weekend, pouring in 13 points on 5-8 shooting
today. She hit 3-4 three-point shots and also grabbed four
rebounds.
Trinity's Meghan Scholbe and
Krista Prato Matthews each added 12 points, and Lauren Andrews chipped
in with 11 points and four assists. Prato Matthews led the team
with seven rebounds, while Scholbe had five boards and a team
season-high nine steals. Scholbe and Andrews were both named to
the All-Tournament team.
UWEC's Heidi Arciszewski was
named the Tournament Most Valuable Player, earning the honor with a
17-point, 10-rebound performance in the Championship game. She hit
just 3-8 from the field, but converted 11-12 free throws to help seal
the win. Amanda Zenner and Rachel Mueggenborg added 10 points each
for the Blugolds.
Trinity will conclude its
three-game home stretch with a Tuesday (January 2) evening game against
Georgetown (KY) College at 6:00 p.m. The Tigers will then resume
SCAC play with a conference weekend on the road at Hendrix and Austin
College.
