Trinity Beats Austin College to Open Final Weekend

Sherman, Texas - The Tiger women's basketball team opened the final weekend of the regular season with a 66-56 win at Austin College on Friday night.

Trinity (18-5, 12-2) led 32-28 at the half, but hit just 35.3% from the field in the period.  The Tigers shot under 30% in the second half, but the team did score on 18-21 (85.7%) of its free throws in the final 20 minutes.  Austin College was held to just 33.9% shooting for the game.

The Tigers used an 11-2 run midway through the first half to take a 22-14 lead, but Austin College trimmed that to just a two-point advantage with 3:32 left in the period.  After seven straight Trinity points that seemed to put the visitors in control, Austin College finished the half with five unanswered points.

In the second half, a 7-0 Trinity pushed the lead to double digits for the first time in the game, and Austin College never fully recovered - getting no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Krista Prato Matthews scored her 10th double-double of the season, hitting for 20 points and 10 rebounds in the game.  She hit 9-13 from the field and also recorded four blocked shots in the win.

Tierney Hughes and Meghan Scholbe finished with 12 points each for the Tigers, while Alexandra Blake just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Scholbe recorded four steals, while Blake recorded three; however, neither led the team in steals because Danielle Hubenak swiped a career-best six in the game.

Austin College's Katy Williams led all scorers with 23 points and also pulled in a game-high 12 rebounds.  amber Stafford finished with 14 points for the 'Roos.

Trinity will face Colorado College in the regular season finale tomorrow night in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  The Tigers have already clinched the SCAC West Division's top seed at the SCAC Tournament, which begins on Friday, February 29.
