San Antonio -
Trinity's women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak
snapped on Sunday, losing 64-81 against Birmingham-Southern College.
Trinity (11-3) trailed 26-43 at
halftime, hitting under 30% from the field in the opening period.
Birmingham-Southern hit better than 50% of its shots.
Halfway through the period, the
two teams were tied at 18-18, but Birmingham-Southern finished the half
on a 25-8 run to account for the large lead.
The Tigers never gave up in the
second half, but their early attempts at a comeback were thwarted by the
visitors. Trinity was finally able to push the lead to single
digits with just over six minutes remaining, finishing with a 15-5 run
that made it 57-63 with 5:53 to play. Birmingham-Southern hit two
free throws on its next possession, and after a Trinity basket put the
lead back at just six, BSC nailed a three-pointer to make it 68-59.
A three-point play on the next
Tiger possession made it a six-point game once again with just under
five minutes left, but Trinity would score only two more points the rest
of the way as BSC finished the game on a 10-0 run.
Meghan Scholbe led Trinity with
16 points and nine rebounds, while Krista Prato Matthews added 14 points
and nine boards. Alexandra Blake came off the bench to score 14
points on 5-6 shooting.
Mallory Mooring led all scorers
with 24 points for Birmingham-Southern, while Reba Ross tied a school
record with 20 rebounds. Ross also had a double-double in the
game, scoring 13 points to go with four blocks and three steals.
Trinity will travel to
Oglethorpe and Sewanee next weekend, continuing play in the SCAC.
The Tigers face nationally-ranked Oglethorpe on Friday night, followed
by a Saturday evening game at Sewanee. Trinity returns home
February 1-2 to host Centre and DePauw.
