The Tiger women's basketball team finished the Trinity University
Holiday Tournament with a 61-70 loss to Carthage College on Saturday
night at Sams Gymnasium.
Trinity (7-2) trailed 29-32 at
the break, despite shooting less than 36% from the field in the first
half. Carthage also shot less than 36%, and was only slightly
better in the second half. The Tigers, though, hit just 9-30 (30%)
from the field in the final 20 minutes.
Carthage led virtually the
entire first half, including a 27-17 lead with under five minutes to
play in the period. Trinity used a 12-0 run to take a 29-27 lead
with just over a minute left in the half, but Carthage scored the final
five points of the period to take the halftime lead.
After a Trinity basket early in
the second, Carthage went on a 13-3 run to take a 45-34 lead less than
five minutes into the period. The Tigers got to within three with
just over eight minutes to play and then again with 3:43 to play, but
Carthage pulled away at the end, making the majority of its free throws
down the stretch to seal the win.
Meghan Scholbe scored 13 points
and grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds for the Tigers, which is the
second-highest rebounding total of her career. Scholbe also had
four steals and played all 40 minutes for Trinity.
Genevieve Hurlbutt led the team
with 16 points on 5-8 shooting, including 4-6 three-pointers in 18
minutes off the bench. Krista Prato Matthews also scored 12 points
in 22 minutes, hitting 6-8 free throws.
Trinity will be back in action
on January 4 and January 5 against Hendrix and Millsaps in Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
