Tigers Fall to Carthage to Conclude Holiday Tournament

San Antonio - The Tiger women's basketball team finished the Trinity University Holiday Tournament with a 61-70 loss to Carthage College on Saturday night at Sams Gymnasium.

Trinity (7-2) trailed 29-32 at the break, despite shooting less than 36% from the field in the first half.  Carthage also shot less than 36%, and was only slightly better in the second half.  The Tigers, though, hit just 9-30 (30%) from the field in the final 20 minutes.

Carthage led virtually the entire first half, including a 27-17 lead with under five minutes to play in the period.  Trinity used a 12-0 run to take a 29-27 lead with just over a minute left in the half, but Carthage scored the final five points of the period to take the halftime lead.

After a Trinity basket early in the second, Carthage went on a 13-3 run to take a 45-34 lead less than five minutes into the period.  The Tigers got to within three with just over eight minutes to play and then again with 3:43 to play, but Carthage pulled away at the end, making the majority of its free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Meghan Scholbe scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds for the Tigers, which is the second-highest rebounding total of her career.  Scholbe also had four steals and played all 40 minutes for Trinity.

Genevieve Hurlbutt led the team with 16 points on 5-8 shooting, including 4-6 three-pointers in 18 minutes off the bench.  Krista Prato Matthews also scored 12 points in 22 minutes, hitting 6-8 free throws.

Trinity will be back in action on January 4 and January 5 against Hendrix and Millsaps in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
