Tigers Defeat Centre With Strong First Half

 

San Antonio - The Tiger women's basketball team opened a weekend of play in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 78-44 win over Centre College on Friday evening.

Trinity (13-4, 8-1) jumped out to a convincing 51-23 lead at halftime, marking the second straight game that the Tigers have scored 50 or more points in the first half.

The Tigers shot 47.6% (20-42) from the field in the first half, while Centre hit just 7-24 (29.2%) shots.  Trinity opened the game with a 23-6 run over the first seven minutes of the game, and hit a jump shot at the buzzer to give the team its largest lead to that point.

Trinity led by as many as 38 points in the game, and Centre could get no closer than 26 points after the break.

Meghan Scholbe led the Tigers with 14 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 6-14 from the field.  She also grabbed four steals and dished out three assists in the game.

Tierney Hughes and Genevieve Schmitt also scored in double figures, adding 10 points each for Trinity.  Danielle Hubenak nearly had a triple-double in the game, collecting eight rebounds and seven assists to go with her nine points scored. 

Chelsea Goodman led Centre with 10 points, while Chelsea Luckey paced the visitors with seven rebounds.

Trinity will face defending Division III National Champion DePauw University tomorrow night.  DePauw is also the defending conference champion, and is ranked 13th nationally.
