Trinity Slips Past Colorado College in Regular Season Finale

Colorado Springs, CO - Trinity's women's basketball team sealed a 70-66 win over Colorado College in the regular season finale on Saturday night.

Trinity (19-5, 13-2) trailed 32-36 at the half, but roared back with strong performances on offense and defense to win the team's sixth consecutive game.  Trinity shot 44.1% in the second half, holding Colorado College to just over 30% shooting in the period.

Trinity hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the win, after Colorado College cut it to a two-point game with just 10 seconds to play.

After Colorado College took a slim lead early in the game, Trinity used a 10-0 run to go ahead 14-8 with just over five minutes elapsed in the game.  The two teams played a very tight game the rest of the half, which included six ties in the first 20 minutes.  Trinity went scoreless over the final 3:21 of the period to allow Colorado College to pull ahead.

Another 10-0 run in the second half turned a one-point Trinity lead into a 51-40 advantage with 11:39 remaining in the game.  Colorado College kept coming back, though, and nearly erased Trinity's 63-54 lead with 3:24 to play.

Colorado College scored five unanswered points to make it a four-point game with 92 seconds left, but Trinity snapped a two-minute scoreless streak to push the lead back to six.  Trinity then made 5-6 free throws in the final 53 seconds to seal the win.

Tierney Hughes hit the clutch free throws with four seconds remaining, giving her a Trinity career-high of 20 points on 7-11 shooting.  Hughes drained 4-8 three-pointers to become just the fifth player in school history to score 40 or more threes in a season.  Genevieve Hurlbutt is one of the others to have reached 40 or more threes, and she hit another against Colorado College to tie the school record for three-pointers in a season with 44.

Krista Prato Matthews recorded her 11th double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds, connecting on 9-13 from the field and blocking four shots.

Alexandra Blake led all players with 13 rebounds, missing out on a double-double by one point.  Meghan Scholbe chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds, while Danielle Hubenak led the team with five assists.

Colorado College's Melanie Auguste just missed a triple-double, collecting nine assists to go with a game-high 26 points and 13 rebounds.  Auguste also recorded five steals in the loss.

Trinity will face University of the South-Sewanee in the first round of the SCAC Championships Tournament next weekend at Hendrix College.  The winner will be in the SCAC Semifinals against an opponent to be determined.
