Trinity's women's basketball team sealed a 70-66 win over Colorado
College in the regular season finale on Saturday night.
Trinity (19-5, 13-2) trailed
32-36 at the half, but roared back with strong performances on offense
and defense to win the team's sixth consecutive game. Trinity shot
44.1% in the second half, holding Colorado College to just over 30%
shooting in the period.
Trinity hit a pair of free
throws in the final seconds to seal the win, after Colorado College cut
it to a two-point game with just 10 seconds to play.
After Colorado College took a
slim lead early in the game, Trinity used a 10-0 run to go ahead 14-8
with just over five minutes elapsed in the game. The two teams
played a very tight game the rest of the half, which included six ties
in the first 20 minutes. Trinity went scoreless over the final
3:21 of the period to allow Colorado College to pull ahead.
Another 10-0 run in the second
half turned a one-point Trinity lead into a 51-40 advantage with 11:39
remaining in the game. Colorado College kept coming back, though,
and nearly erased Trinity's 63-54 lead with 3:24 to play.
Colorado College scored five
unanswered points to make it a four-point game with 92 seconds left, but
Trinity snapped a two-minute scoreless streak to push the lead back to
six. Trinity then made 5-6 free throws in the final 53 seconds to
seal the win.
Tierney Hughes hit the clutch
free throws with four seconds remaining, giving her a Trinity
career-high of 20 points on 7-11 shooting. Hughes drained 4-8
three-pointers to become just the fifth player in school history to
score 40 or more threes in a season. Genevieve Hurlbutt is one of
the others to have reached 40 or more threes, and she hit another
against Colorado College to tie the school record for three-pointers in
a season with 44.
Krista Prato Matthews recorded
her 11th double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds,
connecting on 9-13 from the field and blocking four shots.
Alexandra Blake led all players
with 13 rebounds, missing out on a double-double by one point.
Meghan Scholbe chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds, while
Danielle Hubenak led the team with five assists.
Colorado College's Melanie
Auguste just missed a triple-double, collecting nine assists to go with
a game-high 26 points and 13 rebounds. Auguste also recorded five
steals in the loss.
Trinity will face University of
the South-Sewanee in the first round of the SCAC Championships
Tournament next weekend at Hendrix College. The winner will be in
the SCAC Semifinals against an opponent to be determined. |
