Trinity Opens Holiday Tournament With Comeback Win

 

San Antonio - Trinity's women's basketball team overcame a 10-point first half deficit to score an 80-65 win over Elmhurst College at the Trinity University Holiday Tournament on Friday evening.

Trinity (7-1) trailed 33-41 at the break, committing 13 turnovers and shooting under 40% in the first half.

The two teams went back and forth for much of the first half, but Elmhurst took control after turning a four-point Trinity lead into a 10-point advantage for the visitors.  Elmhurst used a 15-1 run over a three-minute span to accomplish that feat, taking its largest lead of the game.

The Tigers cut the lead to six a couple of minutes later, but they could get no closer until the second half - which started with a 9-0 run that gave Trinity a 42-41 lead with 17:07 to play.  The Tigers never trailed again, though Elmhurst did tie the game shortly after.

An 11-0 run by Trinity pushed the lead to 12 points (59-47) with 11:08 remaining, then after a basket by Elmhurst, the Tigers had another 9-0 run to make it a 68-49 advantage with just over seven minutes left.

Meghan Scholbe led Trinity with 19 points on 6-10 shooting.  She also hit 7-8 free throws and grabbed five rebounds in her 31 minutes of play.

Krista Prato Matthews finished with 13 points and five rebounds in just 15 minutes, while Tierney Hughes chipped in with 11 points to go with five boards and three assists.

Megan D'Errico scored a career-best 12 points for the Tigers, hitting 8-10 free throws and pulling in four rebounds.

Alexandra Blake finished with five points and a team-best six rebounds, while Danielle Hubenak and Rachel Snyder tied for the team lead with four assists each.

Lyndsie Long paced Elmhurst with 19 points on 6-16 shooting - including 3-8 free throws.  Brittany Bobruk was the only other Elmhurst player scoring in double figures, adding 11 points and three steals.

Trinity will face Carthage tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. to conclude the tournament.  Elmhurst will take on Mary Hardin-Baylor at 5:00 p.m.  Earlier this afternoon, Carthage edged UMHB 69-64.
