The Tiger women's basketball team lost for the first time this season,
falling 53-55 to George Fox University in the Trinity Thanksgiving
Classic on Saturday evening.
Trinity (3-1) was down 19-26 at
the half, hitting just 6-24 (25%) from the field in the opening 20
minutes. George Fox didn't shoot well in the first half overall,
but did hit 5-12 (41.7%) from three-point range. At one point,
Trinity trailed by nine points in the period.
The Tigers fought back nicely in
the second half, hitting over 45% from the field and putting themselves
back in the game. Trinity actually went ahead by six at one point,
but George Fox was able to keep pace. George Fox broke a 44-44 tie
with a 7-2 run late in the game, holding a five-point advantage with
just over three minutes to play.
With just 90 seconds left and
trailing by four, Trinity was able to sandwich a pair of baskets around
a steal defensively to tie the game with 24 seconds left. George
Fox called a timeout to set up a play, which turned out to be a jump
shot for Katy Campbell with just five seconds left, breaking the 53-53
tie.
Trinity called timeout with just
over three seconds remaining to set up a final play, but after the
inbounds, the Tigers turned the ball over going to the rim at the
buzzer.
Krista Prato Matthews led
Trinity with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Meghan Scholbe had seven
points and 10 boards. Scholbe also had four steals, while Prato
Matthews added a pair of blocks.
Genevieve Hurlbutt scored 11
points in 20 minutes off the bench, while Danielle Hubenak scored six
points on 3-4 shooting for Trinity.
Campbell led George Fox with 11
points and a game-high 20 rebounds, while Tiffany Behary scored 16
points and seven assists. Jaime Hubka was 4-8 shooting for 14
points in her 35 minutes of action.
Trinity will face the College of
Notre Dame (MD) tomorrow afternoon to conclude the tournament.
George Fox squares off against Saint Mary's (IN) College, which beat
Notre Dame in earlier action today.
