The Tiger women's basketball team earned a 70-51 victory over
Hardin-Simmons University to finish off the Trinity Tip-Off Classic on
Sunday afternoon.
Trinity (2-0) led 36-20 at
halftime, hitting 46% from the field and holding the Cowgirls to 28%
shooting. Hardin-Simmons shot better in the second half, but so
did the Tigers, who hit 48% of their shots in the second period.
Meghan Scholbe was named the
Tournament Most Valuable Player, while Krista Prato Matthews earned a
spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Scholbe finished with 11 points
and eight rebounds today, adding four steals and three blocks as well.
In yesterday's win over UT-Dallas, she had career highs with 27 points
and 20 rebounds.
Prato Matthews posted a
double-double in today's game, leading the Tigers with 14 points and 11
rebounds. She hit 6-10 from the field, recorded three blocks to
tie Scholbe for the team lead, and also dished out four assists to lead
the team. She had seven points and 15 boards in yesterday's game.
Genevieve Hurlbutt hit four
three-pointers to give her 12 points off the bench today, while Tierney
Hughes added 10 points and three steals for the Tigers.
Mollie Brawner scored 21 points
in 27 minutes off the bench for Hardin-Simmons, which followed her
22-point effort in yesterday's win over Benedictine (IL) University.
Lindsey Newcombe had 15 points and 10 rebounds yesterday, but was held
to seven points and seven boards against the Tigers. Both Brawner
and Newcombe were also named All-Tournament.
Trinity continues its long
homestand to open the season, facing off against Mary Hardin-Baylor on
Tuesday evening. The game will tip off at 5:30 p.m.
