The Tiger women's basketball team finished off a weekend sweep in
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with an 85-71 win over
Millsaps College on Saturday night.
Trinity (9-2, 4-0) led 42-32 at
the half, and never trailed in the game. The Tigers scored the
first eight points of the game, and held a 22-9 lead less than eight
minutes into the game. Millsaps got no closer than seven points
the rest of the period.
Several minutes into the second
half, Millsaps did mount a comeback with an 8-0 run that made it a 50-46
Trinity lead. The Tigers responded with a 14-3 spurt that pushed
the lead back to 15 points with 9:38 remaining, essentially sealing the
win.
Meghan Scholbe and Krista Prato
Matthews scored 16 points each for Trinity, combining to hit 14-21 shots
from the field. Neither played more than 25 minutes in the game.
Scholbe added five rebounds and three assists, while Prato Matthews
finished with seven boards.
Scholbe also became the 49th
player in SCAC history to reach 500 rebounds in a career. She came
into the game with 496 career rebounds, and is the 13th player in
Trinity history to reach the milestone.
Tierney Hughes scored 12 points
and added six assists, hitting 4-7 from three-point range. Martha
King came off the bench to hit 5-5 from the field for 10 points, as well
as recording four blocked shots.
Ronda Webb led all players with
29 points for Millsaps, while Tiffany Whitmore finished with 19 points
and six assists. Both players also had eight rebounds.
Trinity will return home on
Saturday to face Southwestern University at 3:00 p.m. The
following Monday (January 14), the team will host East Texas Baptist
University.
