San Antonio -
Trinity's women's basketball team lost its second consecutive game on
Friday night, falling 73-84 to 22nd-ranked Oglethorpe University.
Trinity (11-4, 6-1) also lost
for the first time in conference play this season. Trinity, which
trailed 36-37 at the half, shot over 40% in both periods, but hit just
2-19 (10.5%) from three-point range in the game.
Oglethorpe jumped out to a 9-2
lead in the opening minutes, but Trinity answered with nine unanswered
points to take a brief 11-9 lead. The Tigers pushed the lead to
six late in the period, but Oglethorpe scored its own 9-0 run to pull
ahead by three with under four left in the half. The Tigers led by
three with 70 seconds left, but Oglethorpe hit two buckets in the final
minute to steal the halftime lead.
Despite the home team scoring
the first three baskets of the second half, the game stayed fairly close
early in the second - though Oglethorpe never gave up the lead.
After the Tigers cut the lead to four (54-50) with 12:34 to play,
Oglethorpe went on a 10-0 run to take control of the game. Trinity
got to within eight with 95 seconds to play, but Oglethorpe hit 9-10
free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Meghan Scholbe led Trinity with
her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with 17 points and 10
rebounds. Scholbe also had four assists and five steals in the
game, hitting 8-15 from the field.
Alexandra Blake came off the
bench to score 14 points for the Tigers, while Rachel Snyder added 13
points and four assists before fouling out. Snyder's 13 points
ties her career-high, set in 2005-06 against Texas Lutheran.
Danielle Hubenak also scored in double digits, contributing 11 points
and a pair of assists, while Krista Prato Matthews finished with six
points and 10 rebounds.
Oglethorpe's Katie Kulavic and
Anna Findley finished with 20 points each to lead all scorers, while
Tina Grace knocked in 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to go with six
assists and four steals.
Trinity will face University of
the South-Sewanee tomorrow evening, finishing off the SCAC road trip in
the East Division. Trinity returns home next Friday and Saturday
night, hosting Centre and DePauw.
