Trinity's women's basketball team opened a Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference doubleheader with an 80-52 win over Southwestern University
on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (10-2, 5-0) led 45-27 at
the half and never looked back in the game. The Tigers shot at
least 40% from the field in both periods, while Southwestern was at
33.3% or lower in both halves. Southwestern was held to just seven
total field goals in the second half.
The game stayed close early on,
but Trinity turned a 13-9 lead into a 27-13 advantage near the halfway
point of the first period. Southwestern then trimmed the lead down
to eight with 6:01 remaining, but the Tigers closed the half on a 16-6
run to pull away. Trinity led by as many as 30 early in the
second, and by as much as 34 points in the final minutes.
Meghan Scholbe finished with
game highs with 22 points and 13 rebounds, not to mention her four
steals. Scholbe had a double-double by halftime, and hit 9-13
shots for the entire game.
Tierney Hughes hit 3-6
three-pointers on her way to 13 points, while Danielle Hubenak added 11
points to go with five rebounds and a game-high six assists.
Krista Prato Matthews chipped in with nine points and seven boards,
adding a game-best four blocks.
Beth Thomas led Southwestern
with 13 points, and was the only player in double figures on her team.
Staley Mullins grabbed eight rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench to
lead the team.
Trinity's Monday night game
against East Texas Baptist University has been cancelled, meaning
Trinity will not be back in action until Friday night against Rhodes.
The Tigers will then face Birmingham-Southern on Sunday in another SCAC
weekend.
