Georgetown, Texas -
The Tiger women's basketball team overcame a slow start to pull out a
67-60 win over Southwestern University on Friday night.
Trinity (14-5, 9-2) trailed
25-26 at halftime, shooting just 28.6% (10-35) in the first period.
The Tigers shot 34.5% in the second half, but it was a 19-25 second half
performance at the foul line that really vaulted the team to victory.
Southwestern led by as many as
five points in the first half, and Trinity needed a three-point basket
in the final minute to cut the lead to just one at the break.
Neither team could pull away in
the opening minutes of the second half, but Trinity broke a 38-38 tie
with a 9-0 run in the middle of the period. Southwestern cut the
lead to just three points with 3:50 left and again with 2:31 remaining,
but Trinity scored six straight points to push the clock under a minute
and take control of the game.
Krista Prato Matthews led
Trinity with 21 points and 14 rebounds in the game, putting together her
seventh double-double of the season - though it's her first in the last
six games. She also finished with three blocks and four steals in
the game, hitting 7-18 from the field and 7-9 from the line.
Tierney Hughes was the only
other Tiger player in double figures, scoring 12 points and grabbing
nine rebounds - missing her career-high in rebounds by just one.
Hughes also had four steals and hit 4-7 three-point shots.
Meghan Scholbe, who had led the
team in scoring in four of the past five games, finished with eight
points and seven rebounds. Rachel Snyder also had eight points,
setting a new career high with six free throws made. Danielle
Hubenak chipped in with eight points and three assists off the bench,
while Genevieve Hurlbutt also added six points.
Amanda Gordon came off the bench
to lead Southwestern with 11 points, while Beth Thomas finished with a
solid 10 points and 11 boards, hitting 5-7 from the field in 22 minutes.
Trinity will host the University
of Dallas tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m., finishing off the Tigers'
regular season non-conference schedule.
