Trinity's women's basketball team opened its season with a 63-59 victory
over the University of Texas-Dallas at the Trinity Tip-Off Tournament on
Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (1-0) led 40-33 at the
break after shooting 46.9% in the opening 20 minutes. Both teams
shot less than 30% in the second half, but the Tigers were able to hold
on for the victory.
The Tigers led by as many as 15
points early in the second half, but the Comets were able to knock the
lead down to six with a 9-0 run, then cut it to a one-possession game
with a basket with with under two minutes to play. Meghan Scholbe
then converted a three-point play to put Trinity back in command with
1:22 left.
Scholbe led all players with a
career-high 27 points and a career-best 20 rebounds in the game, hitting
9-11 from the field and 8-8 from the foul line. She also finished
with two assists and three steals in her 38 minutes on the floor.
Genevieve Hurlbutt also finished
with a career-high, scoring 21 points off the bench, hitting 6-13
three-point tries, and playing a total of 31 minutes in the game.
Krista Prato Matthews scored seven points and grabbed 15 rebounds for
the Tigers as well.
Ericka Baker led three Comets
players in double figures with 15 points, also grabbing six boards and
hitting 7-7 from the free throw line.
Trinity held a significant 54-35
edge in rebounding, but 32 total turnovers kept the game close to the
very end.
Trinity will face Hardin-Simmons
tomorrow afternoon to finish the tournament. Hardin-Simmons
defeated Benedictine (IL) 67-55 to start the day.
