Trinity Falls to Baldwin-Wallace to Open Tournament Play

San Antonio - The Tiger women's basketball team showed the effects of a three-week layoff between games, losing a 72-57 decision to Baldwin Wallace College at the Trinity University Texas Challenge on Monday night.

Trinity (7-2) had its six-game winning streak snapped in the process, and the Tigers shot less than 33% from the field in the game.  Trinity hit just 26.5% of its shots in the second half.

The Tigers took a brief lead in the opening minutes, but after Baldwin Wallace went ahead 3-2 with 18:27 to play, the visitors never trailed again.  Baldwin Wallace quickly built its lead up to double digits, but Trinity used an 8-0 run to get back to within two with just over five minutes to play in the first half.  Baldwin Wallace took a 31-26 lead into halftime, though, answering each of Trinity's offensive spurts.

The teams traded baskets in the second half, with the Yellow Jackets leading by no more than eight points in the early going.  After Trinity made it 45-41 with 11:24 to go, however, Baldwin Wallace scored nine unanswered points to take command of the game.  The Tigers got to within nine in the final minutes, but could get no closer.

Krista Prato Matthews led Trinity with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the game, while Abby Dietert also tied for the team lead with 14 points.  Dietert hit 4-9 from the field and 6-6 from the foul line and grabbed six boards.

Danielle Hubenak added 12 points to go with four assists and four steals.  Alexandra Blake chipped in with eight points and four rebounds, and Lauren Hickey finished with six points on her two three-point field goals.

Ariel Brough led all scorers with 18 points for Baldwin Wallace, while Jessica Butzer came off the bench to contribute 17 points for the visitors.  Brough also had 10 boards for a double-double, while Mariah Strayer led the Yellow Jackets with 11 rebounds.

Trinity will face 14th-ranked Southern Maine tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.  Southern Maine was upset by Mary Hardin-Baylor 82-73 earlier today.  Mary Hardin-Baylor and Baldwin Wallace will tip off at 5:00 p.m.
