Colorado Springs, Colorado -
The Trinity women's basketball team held off Colorado College for a
70-65 win in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both
teams on Friday night.
Trinity (6-1, 1-0) trailed 18-30
at the half after an abysmal shooting performance in the first half that
saw the visitors hit just 8-29 (27.6%) from the floor. The second
half was just the opposite, though, as Trinity hit 22-34 (64.7%) from
the field and came back for the win.
Colorado College used an 8-0 run
early in the first half to break a 9-9 tie, then scored the final six
points of the period to open up the 12-point advantage. Trinity's
19-7 run to open the second half tied the game, though, and it was a
close contest the rest of the way.
Trinity did have a 9-0 run late
in the game to make it a 62-55 lead, but Colorado College had a quick
answer with six straight points to cut the lead to one with 2:23 to
play. Trinity then hit three straight shots and a pair of free
throws with eight seconds left to hold on for the win down the stretch.
Krista Prato Matthews scored all
three baskets and both free throws down the stretch for Trinity,
finishing the game with a team-high 20 points and 12 rebounds. She
hit 9-14 from the field and her only two foul shots were the
game-clinching free throws with eight seconds to play.
Ali Marzella came off the bench
to add 15 points and four assists, hitting three three-pointers in the
game. Danielle Hubenak and Abby Dietert finished with 14 points
each. Dietert hit 6-8 from the field, while Hubenak was 6-9 and
added seven assists.
Melanie Auguste finished with 30
points, 14 rebounds, and six assists to lead Colorado College, hitting
11-19 from the field and 7-8 from the free throw line.
Trinity will travel to Austin
College to close out the conference weekend on Sunday afternoon, then
will be off until December 29-30 when the team returns home to host the
Trinity Texas Challenge Tournament.
