Conway, Arkansas -
Trinity's women's basketball team had to settle for a weekend split in
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, losing an 82-76 game at
Hendrix College on Saturday night.
Trinity (16-7, 9-4) trailed
29-48 at the half and was never able to fully recover from a strong
Hendrix run in that first period of play.
Trailing 19-15 with 8:39 before
halftime, Trinity simply went cold offensively and couldn't score points
to keep up with Hendrix - who scored 14 of 15 points in a stretch of
just over three minutes to take a 17-point lead. The Tigers tried
to get back into it a few minutes later, but the home team kept control
the rest of the way.
Trinity was not able to cut into
the lead until late in the second half when the visitors scored 13
unanswered points to turn an 18-point lead into a 75-70 game with just
under two minutes remaining. The Tigers were within three points
twice in the final minute, but Hendrix was able to hang on for the win.
Ali Marzella led Trinity with 29
points in the game, hitting 9-21 from the field and 7-10 from the foul
line. She also nailed four three-pointers in the game, breaking
Trinity's single season record for long-range shooting. Her 48
threes made this year are four more than the previous record, which was
tied by two players last season.
Krista Prato Matthews had 14
points and 10 rebounds in the game, while Danielle Hubenak also scored
14 points on 5-9 shooting. Lindsay Hovland and Alexandra Blake
chipped in with eight points each off the bench.
Christina Byler hit 10-21 from
the field, 5-6 from three-point range, and 7-7 from the line to lead all
players with 32 points for Hendrix. She also led the team with
Trinity returns home next
weekend to take on Colorado College and Austin College in the final
regular season games of the year. Trinity will need a win over
Colorado College on Friday to clinch the SCAC West Division's top seed
for the conference tournament.
