San Antonio -
The Tiger women's basketball team snapped its two-game slide with a
79-62 win over Millsaps College in Friday night Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference action.
Trinity (8-3, 3-0) and SCAC East
Division leader Oglethorpe University remain the lone unbeaten teams in
conference play this season.
The Tigers led 39-29 at the
half, despite neither team shooting above 38% from the field in the
first period. Trinity did hit 9-13 from the foul line, though.
Millsaps actually came out as
the agressor in this game, pulling out to an 8-1 lead in the opening
minutes. The Tigers were able to cut the lead to one, but the
Majors jumped out to an 18-11 lead with less than 10 minutes gone by in
the game. Trinity finally came to life with a 17-2 run that was
highlighted by nine unanswered to start, taking the lead for good.
In the second half, Millsaps was
able to cut the lead in half in the early going, but an 8-0 run by
Trinity pushed the lead back to double digits. The Majors never
got any closer than 11 points after that run.
Krista Prato Matthews finished
with another double-double, collecting 16 rebounds to go with her 13
points, but it was a pair of players off the bench that really
highlighted Trinity's win.
Ali Marzella scored a
career-best 23 points and six rebounds in her 28 minutes of action,
while Lindsay Hovland had a double-double of her own with 15 points and
11 rebounds. Both totals were career-best marks for Hovland, who
also led the team with two blocks.
Danielle Hubenak and Alexandra
Blake finished with 10 points each, while Hubenak also added seven
assists for the Tigers. Blake had four assists and both players
tied for the team lead with three steals each.
LaReina Adams led Millsaps with
15 points and 11 boards, with Tiffany Whitmore adding 14 points on 6-16
shooting. Ronda Webb came off the bench with seven points and a
team-best four assists.
Trinity will face Hendrix
College tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. to finish off the SCAC weekend.
Hendrix defeated Southwestern 72-63 in Georgetown, Texas tonight.
