San Antonio -
The Tiger women's basketball team opened up the 2008-09 season with a
lopsided 102-59 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity (1-0) led 53-28 at the
half, shooting over 50% from the field in its first game of the year.
The Tiger defense was also up to the task, holding Pomona to just 27.6%
shooting in the first period. The defense was even better in the
second half, holding the visitors to just over 21% shooting in the final
The Tigers scored 100 points for
the first time since the 2005-06 season with Trinity scored 103 points
Alexandra Blake and Krista Prato
Matthews led Trinity with two outstanding performances, as both players
posted double-doubles. Blake was 11-12 from the field on her way
to a career-high 23 points and 11 rebounds in just 23 minutes played.
Prato Matthews pulled in a career-best 23 boards to go with 11 points
and a pair of blocks in 23 minutes as well.
First-year Abby Dietert hit 8-13
from the field to highlight her first collegiate game, but she was
joined by two other standout performances by first-year players.
Kelsey Goodell had nine points and four rebounds off the bench for the
Tigers, while Ali Marzella had eight points and a team-high 12 assists
in the game. Marzella's assist total is tied for the fourth-most
in Trinity history for a single game.
Lauren Hickey had a career-best
eight points as she hit a pair of threes for the Tigers, while Danielle
Hubenak finished with seven points and five assists in 20 minutes of
Anja Hughes-Sintson and Deirdre
Chew led Pomona with 15 points each, while Rosa Lee came off the bench
to score 10 for the Sagehens. Hughest-Sintson hit five
three-pointers to lead all players.
Trinity travels to the West
Coast next weekend, playing in the Redlands Tip-Off Classic on Friday
and Saturday. The Tigers face hosting Redlands on Friday night,
followed by a Saturday evening game with Chapman on Saturday night.
