Tigers Open Season With Home Win Over Pomona-Pitzer

San Antonio - The Tiger women's basketball team opened up the 2008-09 season with a lopsided 102-59 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday afternoon.

Trinity (1-0) led 53-28 at the half, shooting over 50% from the field in its first game of the year.  The Tiger defense was also up to the task, holding Pomona to just 27.6% shooting in the first period.  The defense was even better in the second half, holding the visitors to just over 21% shooting in the final 20 minutes.

The Tigers scored 100 points for the first time since the 2005-06 season with Trinity scored 103 points against Oglethorpe.

Alexandra Blake and Krista Prato Matthews led Trinity with two outstanding performances, as both players posted double-doubles.  Blake was 11-12 from the field on her way to a career-high 23 points and 11 rebounds in just 23 minutes played.  Prato Matthews pulled in a career-best 23 boards to go with 11 points and a pair of blocks in 23 minutes as well.

First-year Abby Dietert hit 8-13 from the field to highlight her first collegiate game, but she was joined by two other standout performances by first-year players.  Kelsey Goodell had nine points and four rebounds off the bench for the Tigers, while Ali Marzella had eight points and a team-high 12 assists in the game.  Marzella's assist total is tied for the fourth-most in Trinity history for a single game.

Lauren Hickey had a career-best eight points as she hit a pair of threes for the Tigers, while Danielle Hubenak finished with seven points and five assists in 20 minutes of action.

Anja Hughes-Sintson and Deirdre Chew led Pomona with 15 points each, while Rosa Lee came off the bench to score 10 for the Sagehens.  Hughest-Sintson hit five three-pointers to lead all players.

Trinity travels to the West Coast next weekend, playing in the Redlands Tip-Off Classic on Friday and Saturday.  The Tigers face hosting Redlands on Friday night, followed by a Saturday evening game with Chapman on Saturday night.  Trinity returns home on November 28 and 29 in the Trip Sports Thanksgiving Tournament.
