Trinity's women's basketball team lost its road opener to hosting
University of Redlands 75-84 at the Redlands Tip-Off Classic on Friday
Trinity (1-1) trailed 29-34 at
the half, following a period in which neither team shot above 35% from
the field. The Tigers were much better in the second half -
hitting 16-34 (47.1%) - but Redlands was significantly better by
shooting at a 56.7% clip in the second half.
The game stayed very close
through the first period as neither team led by more than five points.
After Trinity cut the lead to just one (44-43) with just 5:51 elapsed in
the second, Redlands went on a 13-4 run to push the lead to double
The Tigers got to within four
(64-60) with just under seven minutes left, but Redlands again spurted
to a double-figure lead that pushed to as many as 14 points in the final
minutes. Trinity made it a seven-point lead with 23 seconds left,
but the Tigers could get no closer.
Danielle Hubenak scored a
career-high 25 points in the loss, hitting 8-14 from the field and 2-4
three-pointers. Hubenak also hit 7-10 from the foul line and
dished out three assists in her 37 minutes of play.
Abby Dietert hit 5-10 from the
floor for 14 points to go with her five assists and five rebounds, while
Krista Prato Matthews had 11 points and 10 boards for her second
double-double in as many games this season.
Alexandra Blake finished with
nine points and 10 rebounds, while Ali Marzella had seven points and
three steals for the Tigers.
Ali Bueno led Redlands with 22
points, hitting 6-11 from distance, while Shada Sadeghi had 20 points
off the bench - including 4-6 from three-point range. Overall,
Redlands nailed 12-23 from beyond the arc, while Trinity hit just 3-17.
Trinity concludes the tournament
with a game tomorrow evening against Chapman University. The
Tigers continue the three-game road trip with a Tuesday night matchup
against Mary Hardin-Baylor. The team returns home Thanksgiving
weekend for the Trip Sports San Antonio Shootout on November 27-30.
