| I am pretty sure I
thought this on a few occasions this weekend: First, when all our
games got canceled because of Hurricane Ike...which was supposed
to turn towards us and supposedly rain a ridiculous amount.
But…no such luck on either account. Instead, we had practices all
week but were not allowed to hold anything on Saturday (as that was
the alleged day of all disasters). Needless to say - the disaster
went elsewhere and we were stuck with an off day that was rather
sunny. Thus, because of no official matches, we played a U-18 club
team on Sunday morning… I wish I had
something pleasant to say about this match. However, there are few
words to describe it. One word that might work would be bad. And I
mean BAD. We played great the first 10 minutes or so…and then things
went downhill fast. So fast actually, that we were once again left
in the hole at half time, by being down 2-0. And both goals in the
last five minutes. Really though??? I mean, we did come back and
score four goals to win 4-3 (thank goodness), but it took some
drastic measures by Lance to get us there. Is that really necessary?
We know we can score goals…why does it take the other team scoring
for us to do it?
We have not had a shutout this season. And we
only seem to find the net once we have been scored on. Two things
that must change…And we all know it…
What it comes down to now is who will step up
to start the chain reaction? Who will begin to hold her teammates to
a higher standard, until we all are expecting the best from
each other every time we step on the field? Who will start the
process of not giving excuses, and will take on herself the
responsibility of the team - until everyone realizes we all
must be responsible? Who will work her butt off at practice, and
come out even more competitive during the matches over the weekend?
Who will play, from the first whistle, like we are already down 1-0?
It starts with One.
We huddle up on the field before games, 11
bodies tight in a circle, and I put my hand in with ten others and
on Rachel’s count we all yell, “One!” This change starts with the
team being Team. And ends with us winning conference, because we
have figured out that nothing will be handed to us. WE MUST GO OUT
AND TAKE IT!
And off to Rhodes we go… |
