- Trinity's women's soccer team held on for a 3-2 double
overtime win over Rhodes College on Sunday afternoon in SCAC play.
Trinity (8-3, 3-0) led 1-0 at the half, scoring
in the 13th minute of the game. The Tigers then took a 2-0
lead in the 67th minute, and seemed to take full control of the
game.
Rhodes would not go quietly, though, pushing
across its first goal at 81:11, then tying the game 37 seconds later
to force overtime.
Michelle Grambeau took a short corner from
Bekah Gabay for the first goal of the game, then Jennifer Wray found
the back of the net after crosses by Brianna Young and Jasmine
Martin. Young crossed the ball from the right side, but no one
was able to get on the end of it in front of the net. Martin
picked it up quickly on the left side, then crossed it back into the
box where Wray was able to score the second goal of the game.
The first goal for Rhodes came from Karli
Alvino on a rebound shot by Allison Graham. Graham's shot was
saved by Alexandra Blake, but the ball bounced off the post and was
ricocheted back to Alvino for the score. Bailey Morgan then
took a corner from Caroline Voelkel and went top shelf for the
equalizing goal.
In the first overtime, Rhodes had the only
shot for either team, which required a save from Trinity GK Jennifer
Fifield. Trinity controlled the tempo of the second overtime,
forcing Rhodes to play tough defense to keep the Tigers from scoring
- a feat they were able to accomplish until the final seconds.
With 18 seconds left, after Rhodes keeper
Becca Clarin had already saved four shots - including one in the
second OT - Trinity was able to find the back of the net for the
game-winning goal.
Grambeau took a pass from in front of the box
from Jordan Azar, gained full control of the ball, and ripped a shot
into the net, prompting a celebration from the Tigers. Trinity
remains undefeated in SCAC play with the win.
Trinity will face Austin College on Sunday,
October 14, in Sherman, Texas. The Tigers return home on
October 19 against DePauw, followed by a Sunday afternoon game with
Centre. |
