- Trinity's women's soccer team erased a 2-0 deficit late in the
game to pull off a 3-2 win over the University of the South-Sewanee
on Sunday afternoon. Trinity (8-2-1,
4-1-0) trailed 1-0 at the half after Sewanee scored in the eighth
minute of play to take control of the scoreboard. Trinity
managed just five shots in the period, and the two teams combined
for just eight total shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half,
Sewanee struck again to take a 2-0 lead, seemingly taking full
control of the game. The visitors did have control for much of
the game, though Trinity continued to fight and increase the
offensive pressure.
With just over 20 minutes remaining, Trinity's
Allyson Hunter broke loose towards the goal and cut into the penalty
area. She was fouled in the box before she could take her
shot, though, setting up a penalty kick for Danika Wright.
Wright buried the ball into the net to cut the Sewanee lead in half.
Still Sewanee stayed in front, thwarting
numerous advances by the Trinity front line. Trinity took 12
total shots in the period, with eight of those being on goal.
With just over five minutes to play, Trinity's
Chelsea Wilson made a sliding save to keep the ball from going out
of bounds and Brianna Young flicked the ball forward for Abigail
Loar. Loar was able to get around her defender and got a rare
open look at the net. She knocked it in to tie the game with
5:03 to play, and Trinity now had all the momentum.
Trinity could have easily settled for an
overtime period at that point, but instead, just under two minutes
later, Dana Carter fed the ball in front of the net for Jordan Azar,
and Azar pounded it home for another Trinity goal. The team
had gone from being handed its second loss in SCAC play to pulling
off an unlikely win in the final minutes.
Wright and Loar remain tied for the team lead
with six goals each, while Azar scored her third goal of the season
- all of which came this weekend.
Trinity will next take on defending national
champion Wheaton (IL) College on Saturday night, followed by a
Monday night game against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. |
