The Trinity Tigers women's tennis team, ranked 14th in Division III,
defeated Division II's No. 23 team in Tarleton State University 5-4
at Lee College on Friday afternoon.
Trinity (1-0) was down 2-4
in the match, but three Tiger singles players came up with victories
to close out the match and complete the upset.
First-year Erin Jamison
swept 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles, while junior Laura Steinmetz won a
three-set thriller at No. 2 by the final of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The match-clinching point
came from junior Cayleigh Simpson, who won 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 to seal the
victory for the Tigers.
Trinity lost a 6-3 match to
Tarleton State last year, as well as a 9-0 decision in the 2006
season.
Doubles winners included
Steinmetz teaming with Alicia Hunt at No. 1 doubles for an 8-5
victory, while Megan Fish and Megan Jackson cruised to an 8-1 win at
No. 3.
Trinity will take on Lee
College tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. to finish off the weekend trip.
The Tigers will then be off until the home opener against St.
Edward's University on February 15.
